Watch and follow the YouTube video, the lesson contains three parts:

  1. Key Information and content - all you need to do here is watch and listen. We recommend you take some notes for this one!

  2. Learning activity - You are to complete the matching exercise and then justify the most appropriate storage device for each scenario.

  3. Consolidation - these are past exam question and are for deliberate practice to check your understanding.

Mark Scheme

Question 1 (a)(i)

  • Solid state

Question 1 (a)(ii)

  • Fast access...

  • ...less delays when turning the device on / turning pages etc

  • No moveable parts / robust

  • ...can be handled / manipulated / moved without damaging it

  • Small / light enough...

  • ...to fit within a hand held device

  • Low power

  • ...to extend battery life of reader

Candidates need to identify a relevant characteristics of solid state storage for the first mark, and expand by explaining why this is an advantage in an e-book reader for the second mark.

Note: portable / capacity are not acceptable answers here (as solid state storage is not particularly more portable / larger than other forms of storage for this application)

Question 2 (a)

1 mark for identifying the reason why solid state was chosen, 1 mark for explanation.

e.g.

  • Is durable/robust // no moving parts

  • Less likely to be damaged // by example e.g. dropped

  • Faster read/write speed

  • Fats to boot // faster to load maps // more responsive

  • Small in size / light in weight

  • Reduces size of the sat nav // fit inside the sat nav

  • Lower power requirements

  • More suitable for running off batteries

Do not accept portability / reliability

Do not accept "faster" without clarification of what is faster.
